Catfish scammers steal identity of Fort Myers artist

“I’m just a normal guy. I’m a 54-year-old man who keeps to himself, for the most part,” he told NBC2 after we found him and set up an interview.

His name is Christopher Obetz, a local artist who’s gained a large following on social media sharing his artwork.

He does not use dating sites.

“I only use social media as a way to discuss art. Nothing else,” Obetz told NBC2.

This is not the first time this has happened to Obetz — not even close. He’s seemingly become the face of catfishing.

He’s a top target of scammers who’ve stolen his photos, his likeness — and sometimes even his name — to trick women online.

“Every day I get someone telling me they’ve blocked someone on social media that’s pretending to be me. Absolutely,” Obetz explained. “At least every day.”

“It’s not surprising.” Firer said. “Because he’s a very handsome individual.”

  • Yep. Second time and scammer has come around me using his pics. I like to play with their heads for a bit and then lay the cards on the table with a twist of surprise. Haha!
